Weird Stories

Sunflower Seeds, Padik, 4th issue of Wierd Storyzzz magazine, Riso, printed by Sputnikat

Meanwhile in Russia memes are too good to be true, no doubts about that. One can’t imagine in her/his most wildest dreams all of these happening for real, although it is. And we live in it, it’s the reality of ours. The outskirts of the fallen empire are rich with the most bizarre events, bears in the streets included.

Wierd Storyzzz is a Moscow irregular magazine by Kameeelah Mamedova, one of the most controversial editors in the field of independent publishing press. The following are two comic stories made for Padik and Flirt issues of the newspaper, printed with Riso by Sputnikat.
The idea behind Sunflower Seeds for Padik was strictly visual. It’s a silent story with a certain rhyme of repetitive elements.

Russian phenomenon of 'padik' is yet to be discovered, despite the fact it’s extremelly mundane. Most of the time these are cheap apartment houses, built in the Soviet Union to accommodate as many people as possible. Inhabited by gopniki. Gopnik, a Russian version of British 'chavs', an Adidas addict, loves to keep his hands busy, hence the sunflower seeds, could be a spinner though, much more up to date.

Butilochka was the next one and since the topic of the issue was playful, the idea to get rid of black and print with just acid pink and red seemed tempting.

The format reflects the reality in its best – disposable yet unique, censored, but distributed freely, although extremely locally.

By the way ‘padik’ in Russian means porch and what about ‘butilochka’, well, it’s quite obviously a bottle. Of hooch, of course. What else could it be meanwhile in Russia..?
